Mafia: The Old Country
Hints and Tips:

-= Dinari, loot, and Pasquale's shop =-
Dinari is the only currency. Loot bodies, lockboxes, safes, and sell spare Trinacria
statuettes (about one hundred Dinari each) to fund Pasquale's shrine north of San
Celeste. At the crucifix-marked shrine inside Pasquale's store, buy the Silver rosary
upgrade for five hundred Dinari (+1 bead slot), then the Gold upgrade for one thousand
five hundred Dinari (+2 more slots) for four bead slots total; the medallion slot
stays fixed at one. Shop beads worth early cash: Munito and Potente (five hundred
each), Esplosivo (six hundred), Preparato (seven hundred fifty), San Francesco
d'Assisi medallion (eight hundred, blade durability), Fortezza (one thousand two
hundred, duels only).
-= Knife classes, lockboxes, and whetstones =-
Three knife types appear in shops and missions: Scannaturi for ranged knife throws,
Rasolu for melee takedowns, and Stiletto for the longest blade life. Use Stilettos for
lockbox farming. Lockboxes consume sharpness when pried open; choke enemies instead of
stabbing when you need the blade intact. Press Reload while a knife is equipped to use
a whetstone and restore sharpness. Pair Stiletto with the San Francesco d'Assisi
medallion and the Ingegnoso bead (Chapter 3) for the best lockbox economy.
-= Combat, stealth, and charms mid-mission =-
Swap beads from the Charms tab in the pause menu between stealth and gunfights. Equip
Fantasma before Ludovici's villa to dampen footsteps. Fortunato raises Dinari from
looted bodies; Caricato and related ammo beads stretch rifle and explosive pouches
during set-piece fights. On Hard difficulty, headshots and cover matter more; lowering
difficulty mid-campaign voids the True Soldato achievement.
-= Instinct scouting =-
Press V on PC (D-pad up on controller) to activate Instinct. Enemies highlight through
obstructions so you can plan stealth routes, coin distractions, and knife throws
before engaging.
-= Free Roam, Chapter Replay, and saves =-
After Chapter 3 you unlock Free Roam from the title screen via the Carcyclopedia Drive
option. Money, charms, and most collectibles carry between story and Free Roam. There
is no New Game Plus - use Chapter Replay on the title menu to revisit a chapter with
current gear and grab missed charms or newspapers. The game uses a single autosave
slot, so reload rather than force-quitting if a missable trophy fails.
-= Free Ride update (post-launch) =-
The November 2025 Free Ride update replaced the sparse Explore sandbox with repeatable
activities: five Standoff gunfights, four Assassination stealth jobs, races, photo
mode, Classic difficulty, Cinema Siciliano black-and-white mode, and first-person
driving. Seasoned Hunter needs at least a medal in every Standoff; Speed Demon needs
medals in every race. Assassination jobs are stealth-focused target eliminations
separate from the main story. Man of Honor DLC (2026) adds story chapters plus more
Free Ride jobs on top of this framework.
-= Mission charms by chapter =-
Story pickups complement Pasquale's shop. Chapter 2 Palio: Fortunato on the wooden
podium stairs near Don Torrisi's tent (extra loot Dinari). Chapter 3 Pizzu: Ingegnoso
at the bandit water-pump camp (faster whetstone sharpening).
-= Chapter 4 Il Barone =-
Fantasma on the bandit-camp fence before Isabella's rescue (footstep dampening).
Chapter 5 Vendetta D'Onore: Caricato inside Ludovici's villa (rifle ammo capacity).
Chapter 6 La Difesa Siciliana: Abile beside Giuseppe's cell (stronger knife throws);
Acuto in D'Amico's office (faster aim settle). Chapter 7 Spirito Sportivo: Medicale on
the photo vantage box; Astuto near Enzo's starting position (better consumable drops).
Chapter 13 Capiregime: Destrezza on a barrel after the Mezzone fight (faster reloads).
Replay any chapter you rushed if a statue is still missing.
-= Collectible hunting between chapters =-
Use Free Roam or Chapter Replay between story missions to backtrack for missed charms,
newspapers, photographs, saints' cards, and mystery foxes you skipped during linear
chapters. Most pickups are not permanently missable once replay unlocks, but
chapter-exclusive charms still need the correct replay pass. Mystery foxes are never
map-marked; listen for rustling bushes and check rooftops after major missions.
-= Driving, horses, and vehicles =-
Chapter 2's Palio introduces horses; later chapters add cars, trains, and boats.
Vehicle sections are largely scripted - focus on staying on route markers during
chases. Customizing a car and a horse unlocks separate style achievements. Free Ride
adds optional race retries if you failed medal thresholds during the campaign.
-= Palio horse race (Chapter 2) =-
The Palio is a two-lap sprint against eight riders. Save spurs for straight sections
to close gaps; spur tight corners while rivals brake. Your horse accelerates over the
lap even without button mashing, so avoid spamming spurs and pick overtakes when the
track opens.
-= Chapter 7 sprint race and train chase =-
Spirito Sportivo forces a six-car sprint you must finish within eight minutes for
Fastest Man in Sicily; shortcuts keep times near six minutes and checkpoint restarts
forgive crashes. The train-chase beat requires holding acceleration through the full
run - restart a checkpoint after any spin-out for Full Steam Ahead.
-= Recommended charm priorities =-
Early picks: Fortunato for loot cash, Ingegnoso for lockboxes, Fantasma before
Ludovici. Stealth chapters pair Fantasma with San Francesco for blade durability. Hard
mode favors Medicale and Astuto for consumable drops. Fill the last bead slot with
Destrezza reload speed or Preparato bandage capacity depending on playstyle.
-= Difficulty and trophy prep =-
Select Hard at the start and never drop lower if you want True Soldato. Salvatore's
Apprentice requires opening any safe before reading its clue note - plan that on a
fresh chapter replay if you already looted the documents. The Collector demands every
mystery fox, newspaper, photograph, and saints' card; leave systematic cleanup for
post-story Free Roam rather than slowing your first playthrough.
Collectibles:
-------------
-= Mystery foxes =-
Fifty hidden foxes rustle in bushes across Sicily. They never appear on the map.
Mystery Fox Domination requires finding all fifty; one fox is sold at Pasquale's for
five thousand Dinari if you prefer paying over searching.
-= Newspapers, photographs, and saints' cards =-
Fifty newspapers, twenty-three photographs, and twenty saints' cards fill the
Collection menu and count toward The Collector alongside foxes. Newspapers often sit
in readable racks; photos and cards hide in mission spaces and Free Roam districts.
-= Notes and Trinacria =-
Roughly ninety journal notes document lore and safe clues; they do not affect
completion percentage. Fifty-nine Trinacria coins are optional vendor fodder at about
one hundred Dinari each - handy early cash, not required for one hundred percent.
How to Find & Use Charms:
-------------------------
-= Keep your eyes peeled =-
Charms are golden statues hidden on shelves, in dim hallways, and inside breakable
crates. They never appear on the map, so leave no container unsmashed during each
chapter.
-= Get em or regret em =-
Charms are chapter-specific pickups. Speed-run a mission and you must reload an old
save or revisit the chapter through Chapter Replay - there is no New Game Plus.
-= Pay Pasquale =-
Your top priority should be unlocking the extra bead slots at Pasquale's store
(crucifix shrine icon). Silver and Gold rosary upgrades raise you from one bead slot
to four; one medallion slot stays fixed. More slots mean more perks, which will
transform you from a common goon into a force to be reckoned with.
-= Equip and swap =-
Equip or swap charms anytime from the Charms tab in the pause menu.
Safe Combinations:
------------------
-= General =-
* Safes use three two-digit numbers (six digits total). You do not need the written
code: the dial makes a slightly higher-pitched click on the correct number.
* Opening a safe without finding its clue first counts toward an achievement.
-= Lemon farm (Chapter 3) =-
* Combination: 10-20-30
* Reward: 200 denarii
* During your visit to the lemon farm, pay attention to the bright turquoise cabinet.
On it you will find a piece of paper with the title "Romantic Poem of a Farmer".
Despite the poetic title, it is this text that hides the numerical hint. And the
safe is nearby, so you won't have to look for long.
-= Alcohol warehouse (Chapter 3) =-
* Combination: 21-10-08
* Reward: 200 denarii
* Before you head to the whiskey storage area, make a detour to the office on the left
side. It's there, in the back corner, behind the dresser, that the safe you need is
hidden. The document with the code is called "Confiscation Warehouse - Incident
Reports" and is lying on the surface of that very dresser. Don't miss the
opportunity to earn some cash.
-= Bracanti factory (Chapter 6) =-
* Combination: 00-01-02
* Reward: 300 Dinari (optional)
* Bracanti's safe still uses the factory default; notes scattered through the building
point to the sequence.
-= Marino office (Chapter 6) =-
* Combination: 28-34-12
* Reward: 300 Dinari plus relocation papers for D'Amico's safe (optional)
* Marino's safe still uses last month's combination according to a note in the office.
Loot the papers inside before opening D'Amico's story safe.
-= D'Amico's office (Chapter 6) =-
* Combination: 02-19-62
* Contents: Giuseppe's Printing Plates (story item)
* You will find this safe in D'Amico's office. On the table closest to the entrance,
read "Monthly Reminders" for the code dates. This safe advances the main storyline,
not your wallet: Giuseppe's Printing Plates inside are necessary to continue the
mission.
Secrets:
--------
-= Garden Rendezvous (Chapter 3) =-
At the start of Chapter 3, during Meet Luca at the Stables, Isabella sends an optional
Meet Isabella in the garden prompt. Visit the white diamond marker before reporting to
Luca to unlock Garden Rendezvous.
-= Salvatore's Apprentice missable =-
Crack any safe before picking up its clue document to earn Salvatore's Apprentice. If
you already read the poem or incident report during the story, use Chapter Replay on
that chapter and open the dial first on a fresh attempt. You can also crack a safe
without its note by listening for the higher-pitched dial click on each correct
number, then entering the full code manually.
-= Man of Honor and Fantasma (Chapter 5) =-
Capture boss Ludovici alive during the villa assault, then refuse the cold-blood
execution order to unlock Man of Honor. Complete the entire Ludovici estate without
raising alarm while Fantasma is equipped for the Fantasma trophy. If you already
executed Ludovici, Man of Honor can still unlock in Chapter 13 Capiregime: when Tino
orders you to shoot Matteo Costa at the church, holster your weapon and wait; Cesare
kills Costa and the trophy counts without changing the story.
-= Silent Hunter (Chapter 13) =-
Before killing boss Dino Mazzone in the forest camp, silently eliminate his guards one
by one. Choking or knifing sentries does not break Silent Hunter as long as the camp
never raises alarm.
-= Not So Fast (Chapter 13) =-
During the Caccini car chase, destroy his car before it reaches the salt flats. Reload
the chase checkpoint if needed, ram the vehicle, or pre-destroy his parked car during
the preceding shootout by focusing gunfire on the engine.
-= The Old Ways (Chapter 9) =-
Reach the foreman's office in Industria without alerting guards. Stay in cover, choke
pathing workers, and skip loud gunfights until you are inside the target room.
-= Chapter 1 Sant'Agata charm =-
During Get ready for the meal in Chapter 1, grab the Sant'Agata charm on the shelf to
the right of the bathtub before the dinner scene; equipping any charm also unlocks
Protected.
-= Account-linked and preorder charms =-
Lupara comes from preorder bonuses; Immortale from the Padrino pack; Velocita from
Gatto Nero; Lincoln's Charm requires a linked Mafia III save. None affect the main
story, but collectors should claim them before starting Hard mode cleanup.
-= Fox number fifty and Pasquale's shop =-
The fiftieth mystery fox can be bought at Pasquale's for five thousand Dinari.
Community reports say interacting with that purchase while you carry less than five
thousand Dinari can bug the transaction; save up first or finish the fox hunt
manually.
-= Worthy Opponent duel prep =-
Worthy Opponent demands winning Don Torrisi's final duel without taking damage.
Chapter 11 Mattanza is a good rehearsal: you can farm Praecisione sniper and Lupara
shotgun kills for Rare Weapons Expert while learning the duel timing before the
finale.
Solutions:
----------
-= Compact route - Palio horse race (Chapter 2) =-
1. Pick your horse at the stables and enter the two-lap Palio when Don Torrisi sends
you out.
2. Save spurs for straightaways; use one spur burst to pass riders slowing on corners.
3. Stay on the marked circuit - the horse gains speed naturally across the lap.
4. Finish first to advance the story and earn Forza San Celeste automatically.
-= Compact route - Chapter 3 Pizzu safes =-
1. Finish the lemon-farm story beat and read "Romantic Poem of a Farmer" on the
turquoise cabinet unless you are chasing Salvatore's Apprentice (open first, then
read).
2. Dial 10-20-30 on the nearby farm safe for two hundred Dinari.
3. Detour to the left-side office before the whiskey storage shootout; grab
"Confiscation Warehouse - Incident Reports" on the dresser.
4. Open the hidden safe behind that dresser with 21-10-08 for another two hundred
Dinari, then proceed with the warehouse objective.
-= Compact route - Chapter 6 printing plates =-
1. After clearing the Bracanti factory floor, enter the northeast office and open the
default safe with 00-01-02 for optional cash.
2. Cross to Marino's southwest office, use 28-34-12, and collect the relocation
papers.
3. Enter D'Amico's office, confirm dates on "Monthly Reminders," and dial 02-19-62.
4. Take Giuseppe's Printing Plates from D'Amico's safe to advance the counterfeiting
mission - skipping Marino only blocks the paperwork clue, not the plates code.
-= Compact route - Ludovici villa stealth (Chapter 5) =-
1. Before entering the estate, equip Fantasma from the bandit-camp fence pickup.
2. Skip the front gate; circle to the rear wall breach shown in the mission layout.
3. Silently knife or choke guards, avoiding alarm bells, until Ludovici is cornered
alive.
4. Accept the non-lethal capture prompt, then refuse the follow-up execution order to
secure both Fantasma and Man of Honor before the chapter ends.
-= Compact route - Chapter 7 Spirito Sportivo races =-
1. During Win the race, take every shortcut the course allows and keep throttle up.
2. Restart a checkpoint after major crashes; you need under eight minutes for Fastest
Man in Sicily (story wins usually land near six minutes).
3. On Race the train, hold acceleration continuously and reload the checkpoint if you
fall behind the locomotive for Full Steam Ahead.
-= Compact route - Chapter 13 Capiregime trophies =-
1. Infiltrate the forest camp and silently clear Mazzone's guards before the boss
fight for Silent Hunter.
2. Either destroy Caccini's escape car during the yard firefight or reload the chase
checkpoint and blast his engine before the salt flats for Not So Fast.
3. At the church confrontation, refuse to shoot Matteo Costa; wait for Cesare to act
if you still need Man of Honor.
-= Compact route - The Collector post-game =-
1. Beat the campaign, then open Free Roam from the Carcyclopedia Drive menu.
2. Sweep each district for remaining newspapers, photos, saints' cards, and foxes;
yellow icons mark chapter-exclusive pickups during replay.
3. Chapter Replay any mission that still hides a charm statue you need for full combat
loadouts.
4. Buy Pasquale's five-thousand-Dinari fox if one bush spawn remains missing.
5. Confirm Collection menu totals: fifty foxes, fifty newspapers, twenty-three photos,
twenty saints' cards for The Collector and platinum prep.
-= Compact route - Free Ride Standoffs and Assassinations =-
1. Finish the story, patch to the November 2025 Free Ride build, and enter Free Ride
from the title menu.
2. Clear all five Standoff gunfights at least once with any medal for Seasoned Hunter.
3. Complete the four Assassination contracts using stealth routes; scout patrol paths
before engaging each named target.
4. Retry races until every event awards a medal for Speed Demon if you missed medals
during the campaign.
5. Toggle Classic difficulty or Cinema Siciliano from Free Ride settings only if you
still need those standalone mode trophies.
-= Compact route - Combat mastery cleanup =-
1. During Chapter 11 Mattanza or Free Roam combat zones, farm Rare Weapons Expert by
getting twenty kills each with six weapon families (Vendetti pistol, Praecisione
sniper, Lupara shotgun, grenades, and others listed in the achievement menu).
2. Land thirty headshots anywhere for Cold-Blooded; Praecisione one-shot headshots
count quickly.
3. Knife twenty unaware enemies from behind for Secret Assassin; pair with Fantasma
stealth chapters or Assassination jobs.
4. Perform five Scannaturi or Rasolu special knife actions (not Stiletto) for Live by
the Blade during Chapter 5 villa stealth or replayed camps.
5. Return to the Chapter 14 finale or duel practice beat for Worthy Opponent once
dodge timing is comfortable.
