I Am Bread Cheats

I Am Bread

Hints and Tips:
---------------
Submitted by: David K.

-= Start with the Right Control Scheme =-
If you are learning the game on a controller, start with Gamepad Basic. It was added
as the easier control scheme and became the default for new saves. Gamepad Pro keeps
the original four-corner control style. Existing older saves can still open with Pro
selected; connect the controller and change the scheme in Settings if the controls
feel unexpectedly difficult.

-= Understand Grip, Edibility and Toasting =-
Normal bread moves by anchoring one or more corners and pivoting around those grip
points. Grip drains while you hold a surface and refills when you release it, so
long wall climbs are safer when you stop on a clean ledge and let the meter recover.
Edibility is your survival meter in Story Mode. Floors, water, ants, mold and other
dirty hazards can drain it. Active heat sources show visible heat haze; if your
target stays cold, look for a switch, knob, impact trigger or ignition step.
Toast one face to 100%, move away or flip promptly, then finish the other face. Once
both faces are at least 100%, use the finish action; on a standard gamepad, click
both sticks together. Petrol Station finishes automatically after the propane
sequence.

-= Use Spreads for Movement, Not Just Flavor =-
* Jam makes a coated face sticky. Press that face against a wall when grip is low to
slow or stop a fall while the grip meter recovers.
* Butter reduces friction and makes flat travel faster, but the same slipperiness
  makes precise wall climbing harder.
* Honey adds Deliciousness but has no useful movement effect, so take it only when
the detour is worth the extra route time.
* Magic Marmalade appears on the next attempt after you fail the same Story level
twice. Touch it for unlimited grip and Edibility for that attempt; use it when a
blocker matters more than preserving an unassisted score run.

-= Learn in the Tutorial, then Practice in Free Roam =-
The padded-cell Tutorial teaches the basic grip and movement rules before the normal
Story route. After that, use Free Roam to rehearse wall transitions, heat-source
positions and difficult launches. Free Roam removes Edibility pressure and the normal
grip limit, so failed practice attempts cost nothing. Rehearse the Bathroom radiator,
Garden grill and Petrol Station propane route there before returning to Story Mode.

Story Mode:
-----------
-= Seven Main Maps, Tutorial and Epilogue =-
Story starts with the padded-cell Tutorial. The seven recurring scored maps are
Kitchen, Lounge, Bedroom, Bathroom, Garage, Garden and Petrol Station. After Petrol
Station, Story automatically continues into the Car epilogue.

On the seven main maps, the practical objective is the same: keep enough edibility
to reach a usable heat source and toast both sides. The routes below favor
repeatable heat sources rather than every possible environmental trick.

-= Car Epilogue =-
The Car epilogue is the final Story chapter after Petrol Station. Work forward from
the rear of the moving car toward the driver; reach and touch the driver to trigger
the ending sequence.

-= Kitchen =-
* Stay on tables, counters and walls whenever possible; the floor and ant-covered
areas are the main early edibility traps.
* The stove is a reliable fast route. Reach the hob, turn a burner on with its knob,
toast one face, flip immediately at 100%, then finish the other face.
* The toaster is a useful alternative if you can approach its slots cleanly and line
the slice up without falling to the floor.

-= Lounge =-
* A practical route is the brown chair and nearby furniture toward the space heater
on the far side of the room.
* Moving across the control on the side of the heater is enough to switch it on;
you do not need to stop and press it deliberately. Lower the bread onto the hot
grate with enough grip left to stay attached while you toast and flip.
* The television can also become a heat source after the bowling ball above it is
  knocked down onto the set.

-= Bedroom =-
* Use the windowsill, dresser and wall shelves to reach the ironing board without
spending long periods on the dirty floor.
* The iron is the dependable target. Lay the bread across its hot face instead of
gripping the iron itself; concentrated contact can burn one area before the rest
  of the side is ready.
* Move off at 100%, flip on the board, then repeat for the second side.

-= Bathroom =-
* Climb out of the medicine cabinet, use the window side and tables to cross the
room, then approach the wall radiator.
* The radiator is inactive until its knob has been turned far enough for the red
indicator to light. The full activation sequence is in Solutions.
* The hair dryer is an alternate heat source: press its small side control to switch
it on, then use the hot airflow carefully.

-= Garage =-
* From the starting bin, use the central boxes or workbench as safe height toward
  the red lawnmower.
* The mower starts from the button at the top of its handle. Grip the handle before
or as you trigger it because the mower moves sharply across the garage.
* After it stops, the engine housing is hot enough to toast the bread.

-= Garden =-
* Follow the fence toward the shed, then reach the toolbox and the shelf above the
barbecue. A small nail from the toolbox is also a useful launch object for
  advanced movement.
* The barbecue must be lit with a match from the shelf. See Solutions for the exact
  ignition sequence.
* If the direct jump to the grill area is unreliable, use the car or table as an
intermediate landing instead of risking the ground.

-= Petrol Station =-
* The last of the seven recurring Story maps starts around the garbage truck and
store frontage. Work from the truck or shelves toward the upper shelf that holds
  the lighters.
* Take a lighter to the large propane tank and ignite it at the tank control. The
  exact sequence is in Solutions.
* Once the tank ignites, keep clear of the moving tank and wait for the automatic
toasting sequence rather than trying to ride the explosion manually.

-= Useful Heat Source Alternatives =-
The route notes above favor repeatable targets, but several maps have other ways to
become toast.
* Kitchen: hob or stove, oven, toaster, rocket exhaust and ceiling lights.
* Lounge: wall heater, broken television, floor lamp and ceiling lights.
* Bedroom: iron, hair straightener, floor lamp and ceiling lights.
* Bathroom: hair dryer, radiator and ceiling lights.
* Garage: lawnmower and boiler.
* Garden: car hood vents after starting the car, or the lit barbecue.
* Petrol Station: use the propane-tank route with a lighter; see Solutions for the
  complete sequence.

Game Modes:
-----------
-= Current Mode Access =-
The current Steam release has all main game modes unlocked. The six main modes are
Story, Cheese Hunt, Bagel Race, Rampage, Zero-G and Free Roam. The seven recurring
scored maps are Kitchen through Petrol Station; Story also has its Tutorial and Car
epilogue. Starch Wars, Team Fortress 2 and GoatBread/RAMpage are separate bonus
content, not part of the seven-map scored rotation.

-= What Controls the Grade =-
* Story: prioritize Time and Edibility. The result screen also shows Deliciousness
and Toast Quality. Deliciousness from toppings can give a slower clean run more
margin, but it does not replace keeping Edibility high and finishing quickly.
* Bagel Race: time is the rating factor. Preserve momentum and use Reset quickly
after a bad checkpoint entry instead of rescuing a slow line.
* Cheese Hunt: time controls the rating. Integrity determines whether the cracker
survives, but finishing with lower Integrity does not reduce the grade.
* Zero-G: time and fuel use are the main rating pressures. Preserve Edibility as
well; short routes and brief thrusts reduce both time and fuel use.
* Rampage: build destruction score quickly and keep the combo multiplier alive by
  breaking objects in rapid succession.
* Free Roam is unscored and removes Edibility and the normal grip limit, making it
the safest place to practice routes, heat sources and difficult movement.

-= Cheese Hunt =-
Cheese Hunt replaces the normal slice with fragile crisp-bread. Each of the seven
main maps contains five cheese pieces. There is no Edibility meter; hard impacts
reduce Integrity, and reaching zero breaks the cracker. To collect a cheese reliably,
cover it with the cracker rather than assuming a light edge touch registered.
For high grades, time is the main pressure, so learn the five locations first and
then shorten the route. Small Item Flying is especially useful because a cheese
piece itself can serve as the carried launch object before you collect it.

-= Kitchen Cheese - Five Locations =-
* On the Jenga block tower near the starting area.
* On the starting table after leaving the first stack.
* Inside the first wall shelf above the kitchen counter.
* On top of the upper cupboards along the route.
* At the far end by the microwave.

-= Lounge Cheese - Five Locations =-
* On the box with mugs near the opening route.
* On the TV stand or shelf.
* On the cat furniture beside the TV area.
* On the boxes stacked at the brown chair.
* On the floor-level box near the coffee table.

-= Bedroom Cheese - Five Locations =-
* On the bed.
* Under the cowbell on the dresser.
* Under the skateboard on the shelf.
* At the wardrobe after crossing from the door area.
* At the computer monitor.

-= Bathroom Cheese - Five Locations =-
* On top of the medicine cabinet where the level begins.
* On the shelf near the door.
* On the toilet seat.
* On the wall shelf above the toilet area.
* On the soap tray in the middle of the bathtub.

-= Garage Cheese - Five Locations =-
* On the raised sign reached from the rafters and toolbox bridge.
* Beside the mousetrap along the upper route.
* In the back-right corner of the box filled with packing peanuts.
* At the garbage-bin section before the final crossing.
* Inside the stacked-chair structure in the garage corner.

-= Garden Cheese - Five Locations =-
* At the light above the garage door.
* On the car windshield.
* At the sunflower-leaf section beyond the garbage can.
* On the corner of the shed.
* On the lily pad in the pond.

-= Petrol Station Cheese - Five Locations =-
* On the lower shelf directly below the starting shelf.
* Inside the garbage truck reached from its mudflap.
* On top of the gas pump.
* On top of the car.
* On the large machine above the gas-pump area, near the bottle.

-= Bagel Race =-
Bagel Race is a checkpoint course. Preserve momentum, use the marked speed boosts
and avoid over-steering on narrow ramps. The Reset action returns you to the
previous checkpoint facing the intended route, which is valuable when a checkpoint
leaves the bagel badly angled or when you touch a checkpoint before fully landing.
Garage and Garden demand especially clean lines. Petrol Station is more forgiving
once you can roll cleanly through ramps and bridges.

-= Rampage =-
Rampage uses a baguette and rewards rapid destruction. The important scoring rule is
the combo multiplier: breaking objects in quick succession raises the multiplier,
while long gaps let it reset. Start with dense clusters of plates, bottles or
glasses and use wide rotational swings so the fast-moving end of the baguette
strikes several objects in sequence.
If a combo dies, do not waste the remaining run chasing one isolated object. Move to
the next dense cluster and build a fresh chain.

-= Zero-G =-
Zero-G keeps the Story goal but replaces normal movement with thrusters. The four
corner positions provide directional jets, while the two side jets handle forward
and backward travel. Use the corner controls with the movement input to translate or
rotate, and set the camera before a long burn so the directions stay predictable.
Every active jet consumes fuel. Aim first, thrust briefly, then coast; repeated
multi-jet corrections waste fuel much faster than one clean line.
Most levels can use the same general heat source as Story. Kitchen is simplest with
the toaster, while Garage has a furnace that is easier to approach in Zero-G than
the moving lawnmower.

-= Bonus Levels =-
* Starch Wars is a one-off space-combat level. The Starch Destroyer requires a
  specific weak-point sequence; see Solutions.
* The Team Fortress 2 bonus level turns the route into a Heavy-themed obstacle
course with teleporters, a minigun and sticky mines on the way to becoming a
  sandwich.
* GoatBread/RAMpage is separate added crossover content and should not be confused
with the normal seven-map Rampage mode.

Solutions:
----------
-= Start the Bathroom Radiator =-
1. Reach the wall radiator on the far side of the Bathroom and work down toward its
   control knob.
2. Use a low stable surface or the baseboard so the bread can reach the knob without
hanging from a nearly empty grip meter.
3. Grab or push the knob and rotate it until the radiator's red indicator light
   comes on.
4. Climb to the hot top or side surface, toast one face to 100%, move away, flip,
   and finish the second face.

-= Light the Garden Barbecue =-
1. Reach the shelf above the barbecue and locate the loose matches beside the
   matchbox.
2. Take one match and strike its head against the side of the matchbox until it
   lights.
3. Carry or drop the burning match into the barbecue coals below.
4. Wait for the grill to ignite, move onto the hot surface, and toast both faces
without remaining on one finished side long enough to burn it.

-= Ignite the Petrol Station Propane Tank =-
1. Reach the upper store shelf that holds the loose lighters and take one lighter.
2. Move the lighter to the large propane tank lying outside the store area.
3. Strike the lighter against the tank control or valve area. If no gas escapes,
hammer the cap or valve guard with hard bread flips until it comes free, then
bring the lighter back to the escaping gas.
4. Move clear when the tank ignites and let the resulting sequence finish the Story
   level automatically.

-= Destroy the Starch Destroyer =-
1. Ignore unnecessary dogfights and concentrate on the three armored orbs on the
   capital ship.
2. Destroy the two orbs on the top side of the Starch Destroyer.
3. Fly underneath and destroy the third orb on the bottom side.
4. After all three are gone, fly into the newly exposed toaster opening to trigger
   the finishing sequence.

-= Restore a Backed-up Steam Save =-
1. Close I Am Bread. In Steam, temporarily disable Cloud synchronization for I Am
Bread before replacing the local save.
2. Back up the current local save before changing anything. The Steam save is under
   userdata\\327890\remote\save.dat inside the Steam folder.
3. Replace save.dat with the backup you want to restore while the game is closed.
4. Launch I Am Bread and verify that the expected levels and progress are present.
Do not delete the untouched backup yet.
5. Close the game normally, then re-enable Steam Cloud for I Am Bread. If Steam
reports a sync conflict, keep the copy whose timestamp and in-game progress you
   just verified.

Secrets and Useful Tricks:
--------------------------
-= Small Item Flying =-
Small Item Flying, usually shortened to SIF, is the most useful stable physics
exploit for fast routes. Hold a small light object with one grip point, then use the
remaining grip points and movement input to fling the bread while the object stays
attached. The carried object can let the bread keep gaining or redirecting momentum
in midair.
* Good SIF objects include small shards, nails, utensils and cheese pieces that can
be carried without immediately collecting them.
* Aim the camera before launching. A controlled landing is more valuable than
  maximum distance.
* Holding the object still consumes grip, so release it on a safe landing and refill
the meter before another long launch.

-= Use Jam as a Wall Rest =-
If one face is well coated with jam, place that face against a wall when the grip
meter is nearly empty. The sticky surface can hold or slow the bread while normal
grip refills. It is a useful rescue during long climbs, but the added stickiness
also makes fast flipping less responsive.

-= Use Butter for Flat Speed =-
Butter lowers friction. A buttered face can slide quickly across counters and
tables, but the loss of traction is a liability on walls. Keep the buttered face
away from the climbing surface when a route turns vertical.

-= Reset after a Bagel Checkpoint =-
A Bagel Race checkpoint can register before the bagel has fully landed or turned.
When that happens, use Reset immediately. The respawn places the bagel at the
previous checkpoint and faces it along the intended path, which can remove a slow
recovery turn and can save time on technical ramps.

Controls:
---------
-= Gamepad Basic and Gamepad Pro =-
Gamepad Basic simplifies movement and is the default for new saves. Gamepad Pro is
the original four-corner scheme and gives direct control over each anchor. Existing
older saves can remain on Pro; connect a controller before changing the scheme in
Settings.

In Gamepad Pro, the four shoulder and trigger controls grip the four bread corners.
Face buttons grab movable objects, the left stick moves or pivots around active
grips, and the right stick controls the camera. The corner assignments rotate with
the bread, so follow the on-screen highlights instead of memorizing fixed world
directions.

-= Keyboard and Mouse =-
* 1, 2, 3 and 4: grip the bread's four contact points.
* Q, W, E and R: grab a movable object with the corresponding contact point.
* Arrow keys: move or pivot the bread on the standard keyboard layout.
* Mouse: control the camera; click-drag also moves or pivots the bread, especially
while at least one contact point is anchored.
Keyboard controls are configurable. If the defaults are uncomfortable, remap the
grip keys into a compact shape that lets one hand hold adjacent corners without
finger stretching. A controller remains the easier starting point for most players.

Saves and Recovery:
-------------------
-= Windows Steam Save =-
The Windows Steam save is stored as save.dat under the account-specific Steam
userdata tree:
  \userdata\\327890\remote\save.dat
Steam Cloud is enabled for I Am Bread. Because Steam synchronizes Cloud files before
and after game sessions, close the game before making a manual backup and keep more
than one dated copy when you are protecting a long completion run.

-= Configuration Data =-
Windows configuration data is stored in the Registry under:
  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Bossa Studios\I am Bread\
Do not delete this key as a first troubleshooting step. If you need to test a clean
configuration, export the key in Registry Editor first so control and display
settings can be restored.

Technical Issues:
-----------------
-= Maps Are Grey or a Mode Menu Is Empty =-
If every map appears grey with 100% shown, or Free Roam opens to an empty-looking
mode screen, the game may not be connected to Steam correctly. This is a documented
legacy failure state rather than lost Story progress.
* Launch I Am Bread from the Steam Library instead of iambread.exe or an old desktop
  shortcut.
* If the state remains, fully exit Steam, reopen it while online, then launch the
  game again.
* Check Steam and firewall connectivity before reinstalling the game or touching
  save data.

-= Controller Is Not Detected =-
* Disconnect extra gamepads and leave only the controller you want to use connected
before starting the game. Older I Am Bread builds can fail to select a pad when
  several are present.
* For Logitech pads with an X/D hardware selector, simultaneous-trigger problems
have a long-standing workaround: switch the controller to D/DirectInput and
  restart the game.
* Once a controller is detected, check Settings and confirm whether Gamepad Basic or
Gamepad Pro is selected before assuming the buttons are broken.

-= When a Launch or Performance Problem Persists =-
Start with Steam's file verification and remove unnecessary controller or overlay
variables before using old command-line renderer workarounds. Many launch fixes
circulated during the game's early years and are hardware-specific rather than
universal current fixes.
For a reproducible PC problem, the game's support page specifically asks for a
DxDiag report. Press Windows+R, run dxdiag, choose Save All Information, and
preserve the resulting text file together with the exact symptom and Windows build
before contacting support.
