Boring Man - Online Tactical Stickman Combat
Hints and Tips:
---------------
Submitted by: David K.
-= Use the v2 rules =-
The latest official Steam update is beta17f. The retired v1.2.7.7 build is a separate
unsupported download, so old loadouts, server directions, and balance advice may not
transfer. If Steam leaves the game on an older beta, restart Steam before using the
notes below.
-= Start in the tutorial =-
Use the tutorial loadout cabinet to handle unfamiliar weapons before joining a live
room. The v2 tutorial exposes the weapon pool without requiring weapon unlocks,
making it the safest place to compare recoil, alternate fire, reload timing, and
mobility tools.
-= Movement keeps you alive =-
Chain double jumps, wall jumps, rolls, and ladder movement before you commit to a
shot. Enter a fight from a different height than your last peek, then roll through
the landing so a waiting explosive or shotgun cannot punish the same path twice.
-= Use ladders as firing positions =-
Small weapons and grenades can be used while climbing ladders in v2. Pause briefly
below the opening, attack from the ladder, and move only after the defender reacts.
Do not climb into the same exposed tile at full speed when an enemy is already aiming
downward.
-= Build for two distances =-
Dual wielding rewards pairs that solve different ranges rather than two copies of the
same problem. Keep one weapon for open lanes and another for ladders, corners, or
sudden rushes; use equipment for movement, defense, or disruption instead of adding a
third redundant damage tool.
-= Riot Shield timing =-
The Riot Shield occupies the grenade slot and is meant to answer slow, powerful
attacks. Raise it after reading the threat, absorb the shot, then bash or reposition;
holding it constantly tires the shield faster and leaves you without a timely
response when the real attack arrives.
-= Buzzer recovery loop =-
The Buzzer launches a sawblade that crawls along surfaces and can be recovered after
it slows. Fire it into a route the target must cross, then reclaim it when the lane
is safe. Its alternate action spins the blade up for melee or a stronger launch, but
that setup advertises your timing.
-= Drone compatibility =-
The Drone can carry the Keymaster, Bow, Grapplehook, a thrown Knife, or Magic.
Wrench, Sword, grenades, and equipment remain incompatible. Choose the Drone only
when its carried weapon creates a second angle; otherwise the slot is better spent on
a direct escape or defensive tool.
-= Grapplehook displacement =-
The Grapplehook can pull opponents and interfere with their weapon use. Aim it across
pits, hazards, or exposed ladders where displacement has a clear payoff. A missed
hook leaves a long, readable line, so do not throw it from open ground without cover
or a teammate applying pressure.
-= Dynamite control =-
Dynamite can be cooked before the throw and can also be shot to detonate it. Shorten
the fuse only when the landing point is already clear; if the target changes
direction, throw early and use gunfire to trigger the charge instead of carrying a
nearly expired explosive into close range.
-= Survival objective priority =-
Survival ends when the team loses its objective or cannot recover from a wipe. During
flag rounds, stand in the objective area to contest enemy capture instead of chasing
distant kills. During bomb rounds, clear the approach first, then assign one player
to the device while the others hold the lanes.
-= Spend Survival cash by failure risk =-
Survival cash pays for chests, weapons, Vices, and teammate revives. Keep a reserve
when the team is already taking deaths; a stronger weapon is not an upgrade if the
purchase leaves nobody able to revive the player carrying it. Spend aggressively only
when the objective is stable and the revive reserve is covered.
-= Cash and Antacid revives =-
Classic and Hardcore Survival allow dead teammates to return by spending cash or
Antacids. Newly joined players receive Antacids, but a dead player may choose to sit
out the wave and save them. Use the free sit-out choice when the remaining team has
control; revive immediately when one missing role threatens the objective.
-= Beacon investment =-
The Survival Beacon opens during breaks and advances through paid phases. Feed it
cash, specified weapons, and specified Vices; each completed phase grants a benefit,
and finishing it skips to the final wave. Fund it after revive money is safe, and
stop before the next objective becomes unsafe.
-= Stock market discipline =-
The Survival bar opens a stock market every three waves. Treat shares as a
surplus-cash option, not a substitute for revives or required gear, because prices
can move against the team before the money is needed. Sell before a dangerous
objective if keeping the position would block an emergency buy.
-= Host only after the basic checks =-
Player-hosted rooms use peer-to-peer connections. If joining works but hosting does
not, verify the game files, restart Steam, and allow the game through local and
router firewalls before changing network settings. Only use UDP port 42069 forwarding
when the host screen reports Strict NAT or the basic checks fail.
-= Workshop recovery =-
Beta17f repaired Steam Workshop features. If maps or skins still fail to load,
restart Steam and verify the game files before deleting subscriptions or local
content. Re-download only the affected item after the clean restart so a temporary
Steam connection problem does not become a larger reset.
-= Low frame rate recovery =-
Set Sleep Margin to 20 ms, match the game frame rate to the monitor refresh, and test
the Surfaces option. Multiple may help weak or integrated graphics; Single can be
faster when the GPU has enough memory. Change one setting at a time and return to the
previous value if maps or effects disappear.
-= Missing graphics recovery =-
Disable Character Outlines when stickmen are invisible. If water, lava, circles,
decals, or map surfaces are missing, switch Surfaces to Multiple and remove
high-memory sprite modifications before retesting. Keep the working setting once
every hazard and objective marker is visible.
-= Create a useful debug file =-
For repeatable launch or crash problems, add the launch option -output debug.txt,
reproduce the failure once, then inspect the generated debug.txt in the game
installation folder. Remove the option after collecting the log so normal sessions do
not keep producing unnecessary output.
Solutions:
----------
-= First multiplayer session =-
1. Open the v2 tutorial and use the loadout cabinet to test one ranged weapon, one
close-range weapon, and one movement or defensive tool.
2. Practice a double jump, wall jump, roll, and ladder attack until each can be
performed without stopping to look at the controls.
3. Join Team Deathmatch first so deaths reset quickly and objective economy does not
hide basic movement mistakes.
4. Keep the same loadout for several rounds and change only the tool that repeatedly
fails at a specific distance.
5. Move to Survival after you can reach cover, reload, and retreat without using
every mobility option at once.
-= Compact route - Survival opening =-
1. Enter Classic Survival with a loadout that covers an open lane and a close
objective lane.
2. During early waves, keep the team near the flag or bomb route instead of splitting
for distant kills.
3. Buy only enough gear to stabilize the objective, then preserve cash for the first
teammate revive.
4. Open Beacon phases during safe breaks after revive money is protected.
5. Use Antacids when an immediate return prevents objective loss; sit out a
controlled wave to save them.
6. Before a dangerous objective, sell risky stock positions and convert the cash into
revives, weapons, or Vices.
-= Connection and launch recovery =-
1. Restart Steam and the computer, then confirm that Steam login is working before
launching the game again.
2. Verify the installed files and allow the game through the computer firewall and
any router security rules.
3. If only hosting fails and the game reports Strict NAT, forward UDP port 42069 and
retest one private room.
4. For a repeated crash, add -output debug.txt, reproduce the problem once, and keep
the generated log.
5. Remove the launch option after the test and restore any network change that did
not improve the connection.
