Anno 1404
Hints and Tips:
---------------
Submitted by: David K.
Also sold as Dawn of Discovery (North America). PC History Edition adds 4K,
64-bit, and multiplayer matchmaking; original saves still load.
-= Economy first =-
* Anno 1404 is trade and production depth over naval combat; war needs a richer
economy than your rival or you lose attrition fights.
* Use one main island for housing; put industry, storage, and trade on other
islands.
* Balance chains with a production calculator mindset: overproduction burns
maintenance and drains cash (legacy community tip; no in-game calculator
required).
* Sell surplus fish, wood, or stone via warehouse Trading place (minus sells to
AI) or F6 trade routes with balanced buy/sell equations. Do not dump entire
stocks; Hassan and Richard can buy out your warehouses if you oversell.
* Slide citizen happiness to yellow on housing types for maximum tax without mass
exodus.
* Deny ascension rights until you can supply the next tier's needs.
* Ask AI opponents for tribute money when diplomacy allows.
* Speed time (+) while waiting for income to recover.
-= Building and interface =-
* Hold Shift while placing buildings to show influence radii; use comma or period
to rotate.
* Add harbour piers for more simultaneous traders (including mid-ocean
placements).
* Extend influence with warehouses; shorten roads between farms and workplaces.
* Regenerate depleted stone or ore where the map allows.
Achievements (city names and dates):
------------------------------------
-= City names (ten gems each) =-
* Basin City
* BonanzaCreek (also grants title "Cheater")
* Gotham
* Innsmouth
-= Set system date before launch (ten gems, achievement, title) =-
* April 14: title "Anno 1404 fan"
* March 15: title "1503 A.D. fan"
* February 16: title "1602 A.D. fan"
* January 17: title "1701 A.D. fan"
Achievements (ship names):
--------------------------
-= Rename your flagship to unlock ten gems and an achievement =-
* Discovery - Galactica; Ghost Ship; Grampus.
* Heart of Gold - Hispaniola; Nautilus; Nostromo.
* Pequod - Red Five; USS Enterprise; U-96.
Campaign (story):
-----------------
Structured tutorial arc (William vs Edward). Save before and after major quests.
* 1 - Declaration of Faith; Peasant basics, faith chain.
* 3 - Promised Land; Peasants to citizens; tools; harbour.
* 4 - Lost Children; Scrolls to Grand Vizier; first Orient.
* 5 - Storm Breaks Out; Patricians/noblemen; indigo scroll in Orient warehouse;
war machines need noblemen; strongbox on sandstorm island is small static
crates on land, not sea markers; Pearl Reef wreck needs story warships later
(do not rush with weak fleet).
* 7 - Man with the Mask; Nomads to Envoys; king honour scrolls to Vizier; buy
paper/iron/gold; silver from quest.
* 8 - Pillars of Justice; Timed cathedral race; hover cathedral diamonds for
stage materials; pause build near completion to buy time; side quest extends
final timer.
-= General campaign survival =-
* Raise the white flag before entering Marie's harbour or your ships are
attacked.
* Stock gold and reserve warships before war; supply ships die quickly in fights.
* Keep a hidden reserve fleet in the north when the story allows.
* Escort quests: the target ship is not always highlighted; identify it manually.
* Speed time with a positive treasury to rebuild income between fights.
Free honour (warehouse):
------------------------
Submitted by: Wayne
Put an honour-bought item (e.g. coffee seeds) in the warehouse but not in a
socket. Hold minus (-) and double-click the item to clone a copy into the socket.
Place the clone on a ship; keep the original in the warehouse. Sell duplicates to
Northburgh or the Vizier for half honour back. Excavation items pay most; coffee
seeds about 100 honour each. Repeatable.
Joke cheat:
-----------
Name your city BonanzaCreek. A message states there are no cheats; you still get
the "Cheater" title, Cheater achievement, and ten diamonds.
More easy cheats (gems):
------------------------
Submitted by: Blackwell
* Throw 500 tons of goods overboard from your ship.
* Change a house facade 1000 times; click a house 1000 times.
* Cultivate 10,000 tons of spices.
* Refill norias with 10,000 gallons of water total.
* Replenish depleted mines or quarries 1000 times.
* Build 20 fishing huts on one island.
* Build 20 small storehouses on one island.
* Sail 5000 nautical miles with your flagship in one game.
* Trade 500,000 gold worth of goods with Al Zahir or Richard Northburgh.
* Buy from Halarius or Kareem 100+ times (approximate).
* Destroy your finished Cathedral (save first, reload after gems).
* Play over 24 hours; start between 1:00 and 5:00 a.m.; play on Christmas Day.
* Venice add-on: switch neutral special offers 100+ times.
Orient:
-------
The southern map adds Nomads and Envoys, spice, and goods that feed Occidental
noblemen (quartz, books, indigo chains).
-= Unlock Oriental construction =-
* Campaign chapter 4: trade scrolls to the Grand Vizier to unlock Oriental
buildings.
* Sandbox / Venice: buy a diplomatic parchment (honour item) from Lord Richard
Northburgh (northern map), sail to the Grand Vizier (southern Orient), and
deliver it as a gift. Only an Oriental vessel can place an Oriental trading
post; Occidental ships cannot found the harbour alone.
-= Settlement basics =-
* Colonize a desert island with Dates fertility; Spice fertility strongly
recommended.
* Nomads eat dates; build a noria beside plantations in arid tiles.
* About 150 Nomads (roughly 10 nomad houses) unlocks spice production on that
island.
* Carpets for Envoys need silk and indigo (often a second Oriental island) plus a
trade route back to your main Oriental town.
* Mosaic for mosques needs clay fertility plus quartz from a mine; plan a third
patch or import route if one island lacks both.
* Advance Nomads to Envoys only when houses are full, needs are green, and taxes
are set to euphoric (lowest rate). Deny ascension until carpet, mosque, and
mosaic supply are ready.
-= Campaign tie-ins =-
* Chapter 5: indigo-farm scroll is already in your Oriental warehouse; noblemen
and war machines need luxury chains fed from Oriental goods.
* Chapter 7: use honour scrolls from the king with the Grand Vizier; buy paper,
iron, and gold from Oriental traders; silver comes from a quest step.
Special Achievements:
---------------------
* Start a game between 3:00 and 5:00 a.m. for ten gems.
* Play on November 11 at 11:11 a.m. for ten gems.
* Build 1000 peasant houses in one game.
* Play a continuous game for 24 hours.
* Take more than 500 screenshots.
* Spend 1 hour in Postcard view.
* Play 2 hours in close camera, 10 hours medium, 20 hours distant camera.

Secrets:
--------
* Ship rename list, city names, and PC date tricks grant gems and titles (see
Achievements).
* BonanzaCreek city name triggers a fake no-cheats message while still awarding
rewards.
Solutions:
----------
-= Pearl Reef (chapter 5) =-
1. Finish other story quests until the game grants proper warships before
attacking.
2. The key-and-chest objective is misleading if you rush too early; see the
Campaign table.
