How To Edit Save File (for Refunding Upgrade Points):
-----------------------------------------------------
Written by Max

This guide will show how to edit your save file to change what guns you have
unlocked, select different upgrades, give yourself spells or remove them,
give yourself as many upgrade points as you like, increase your health and
ammo counts, etc.

-=Guide to Editing Save File=-

########Warning######
This guide is specifically for Windows 10, but if you dig around for your
save file it may still be helpful if you are on Mac or Linux or and older
version of Windows.

-=Where the Save is Located=-
On windows, your save file is located in
C:\Users\Username\AppData\LocalLow\Buckshot Software\Project Warlock\
Steam\76561197966299106

Note: might be a different number for you.

Username is going to be whatever your windows username is.
It will be the name that pops up when you log into windows.

If AppData is not visible in Explorer, go to View tab on the top of the window,
Options pulldown on right, Change folder and view options, View tab, and then
View Hidden Files, Folders and Drives. This is specifically for windows 10, but
windows has had the option to view hidden files since the 90's so if you look
around you should be able to find the option.

-=How to Edit=-
Inside that folder you should find a file called "gamesave".
That is where your character stats and info is located.

You should make a backup, just in case you screw something up.
Right click on the file and then Copy, then right click somewhere in the folder
and click Paste. It should pop up as "gamesave - Copy"
After that you can edit the original. Thats the one that does not say "Copy" i
n the name. Right click the file, and select "Open with".
That will pop up a list of programs. Open it with Notepad.

Once this pops up you should see something like this:

{"StringData":[{"Key":"CurrentLevel","Value":"SCENE_HUB"}],"IntData":[

This is the guts of it, and where all the info is saved.
Fortunately almost all of it is in plaintext and is pretty straightforward
to decipher.

To make it easy on yourself, you can just give yourself more points and buy
them in-game. {"Key":"UnlockPoints","Value":5}, is the one to unlock more
guns and spells. Just change the number after "Value" to something higher.
Like change the 5 in my case to a 12, or 99 or whatever you feel like.
For perk points and stat points,
use {"Key":"PerkPoint","Value":0},{"Key":"StatPoints","Value":1}

If you want to add or remove spells, use HasSpell1 through HasSpell8.
Just change the value to a 1 to add it, or 0 to remove it. To change gun
types, change the "GunnameUpgrade" value to something else. 0 is not
upgraded at all, 1 is the upgrade on the left in the menu (ie. ballista
for crossbow) and 2 is the upgrade on the right in the menu
(ie. tripleshot crossbow). Same thing with perks.
1 to add the named perk, 0 to remove.

To unlock levels its the same thing. 0 is locked, 1 is unlocked.
For more lives its {"Key":"Lives","Value":17}.

Once you get the hang of it, its pretty straightforward to make the changes
you want. After you are done, go to File -> Save in notepad. Do not change
the name. Then just restart the game through steam.
The changes you made should be present.

-=Conclusion=-
And that's how to edit your save. If you don't want to be "cheating" you can
just be fair about how many points to give yourself. Like remove an upgrade
that cost you 5 points, then give yourself 5 more points to compensate.
Refund accomplished!

Other Tips and Thoughts:

Extra experience can make or break you: Getting the extra level-ups (and stat
points) is a huge help in the game. Do your best to look for as many secrets
as you can. Also, try to kill as many mobs as you can. Don’t take shortcuts
out of the earlier levels – at all.

As a rule of thumb, I tried to find every secret in the first chapter. And for
chapters 2-4, I tried not to leave any level without having found at least half
of the secrets. By the time I reached chapter 5, I became more lenient with
this rule, since my build had already been fleshed out well enough

If you follow this rule of thumb, you should be able to reach character-level
10 before the first boss, meaning you should have an opportunity to select 2
perks. Take advantage of that fact by building your character in prep for the
fight.

The first boss is one of the toughest: Honestly, once I beat the first boss,
I’m usually able to snowball through the rest of the game with relative ease.
But the first boss can be a jerk, with a laser beam that can one-shot you and
a falling carpet bomb that can easily oof you.

Extra-life pickups aren’t (completely) useless: While dying in hardcore mode
means “game over,” you can still pick up the extra lives (and you should), for
they completely restore your health. Use them wisely.

Use the right weapon for the job: Don’t waste all of your pistol ammo on
something tanky like a Scarab. Conversely, don’t use all of your rockets to
kill Grunts. There’s a pretty generous amount of ammo pickups in the game, but
you’ll never be able to use your “favorite” weapon all the time. Learn to mix
it up.

Learn how to effectively use the Chain Reactor: From what I’ve seen, when the
Chain Reactor’s bolt kills an enemy, that enemy explodes into 8 more bolts.
This can cause a chain reaction in which weaker mobs’ death creates more &
more bolts. So with that being said, you’re better off shooting the gun at a
weaker enemy (in a horde of mobs) to ensure that more bolts are created
(which means more damage can be done – which means more things can die).

This is pivotal for the final boss. Save your reactor cells for the 2 final
phases of that fight, and shoot into a huge horde of trash mobs. Doing this
helped me 2-shot the boss in both of those phases, meaning I only needed my
other guns & ammo to last me for the first three phases of the fight,
instead of all phases.

A turret can be your best friend: As mentioned in the previous section, I like
to use the spell Storm Rage. It’s highly effective at clearing out mobs
(especially in boss fights). And the less I have to turn my back from a boss
to kill weak mobs, the more likely I am to survive.

There is zero monster in-fighting: Some mobs can shoot explosive projectiles
that can harm other monsters via splash damage, but you otherwise can’t keep
circle-strafing in hopes that the monsters will eventually kill each other.
That’s your job
